Bird watching in Sri Lanka is a rewarding experience. Despite its small size of not more than 65,610 km2, Sri Lanka records 459 species of birds. A series of microclimatic conditions, which are much dependent on the Indian monsoons, make it possible to have such a diverse range of birdlife in Sri Lanka. An impressive 34 endemic birds make bird watching in Sri Lanka a unique experience as well. Rare virgin rainforest patches in Sinharaja and unique montane rainforests at Horton plains are protected habitats for Sri Lankan avifauna and responsible bird watchers. Furthermore, a set of lowland dry zones provides perfect photographic opportunities for bird watchers who look for aquatic birds and birds of prey.
