Its heart lies in the 200-hectare mangrove swamp known as Kumana Villu, along with scattered tanks and lagoons that attract thousands of birds each year. Visitors may spot Eurasian Spoonbills, Lesser Adjutants, Black-necked Storks, and Pintail Snipes from Siberia, Asian Openbills, Spot-billed Pelicans, and rare beauties like the Malabar Trogon and Red-faced Malkoha. In addition to its rich birdlife, the park shelters mammals such as the Sri Lankan Elephant, the Fishing Cat, and the Golden Jackal, as well as reptiles like the Mugger Crocodile and Indian Flap-shelled Turtle. The best time to visit Kumana National Park is during the dry season, which typically runs from April to September. This period is ideal because the weather is generally dry, and wildlife, including birds and mammals, tends to concentrate around water sources, making them easier to spot during Kumana safaris. The months of April to July are particularly good for birdwatching as many migratory birds arrive during this time to nest in the park's wetlands.
