Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (PEO); as the name indicates, it has a special approach of ex-situ animal care & treatment. The popularity and prominence have spread not only throughout the nation but around the world to the degree that Pinnawala is associated with the Elephant of Sri Lanka.
Nowadays, as host to 93 elephants, the term has been revised by the late Hon. Minister Kalugalle, February 16, 1975. At the moment, Pinnawala was a very isolated place with abundant coconut plantations and, most notably, an environment where mahout supply was not missing. The huge amount of water provided by the elephants is also complemented by the abundance of “Ma Oya” running nearby.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage – Part of Kandy Holidays:
If you are looking for the best things to do in Kandy, here’s a pick for you. Over the years, the sanctuary has increased in scale and popularity, and today there are around 100 of these magnificent creatures in the center. At the peak of all the elephants saved from the rainforests, many births took place at the refuge, the first to arrive in 1984.
The core principle of the orphanage is that the livestock should move easily throughout the day so that the framework of the herd must be formed. Here they live a regular, peaceful existence. They feed their breakfasts every morning – milk for calves, leaves (primarily coconut) for adults – and afterward take a two-hour soak to the Maha Oya River. See the elephants snorkeling in the water; this is one of the most spectacular things of existence.
