Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka, a must-visit tourist attraction in Sri Lanka. Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world and this is founded to care and protect the many orphaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka. Young elephants sometimes fall into pits and ravines in their quest for water during a drought period. Other orphans have been displaced from their wild habitat by development projects or have been found abandoned before weaning, diseased or wounded. The free movement of the herd enhanced the chances for respective individuals of both sexes to get together and mate. The nearby river played a dominant role in this regard, and in 1984, the first baby of Pinnawela was born.
