Overview
Polonnaruwa is the most ancient city of Sri Lanka and it is named as one of the cities of the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura. Polonnaruwa was first declared the capital city by King Vijayabahu. In 1982 the ancient city of Polonnaruwa was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The ruins in Polonnaruwa are in a compact area so you can visit them quite easily.
