Seetha Amman temple is the only temple dedicated to Sita, the wife of Lord Rama. It is located in the area of Sita Eliya, in Nuwara Eliya which is believed to be the place where kidnapped Sita was held. It is an important site on the Ramayana trail in Sri Lanka.
Despite being built in the early 2000s, the temple’s location appears to have been a sacred site for much longer, as evidenced by the discovery of three idols. The idols were found in a nearby stream, one of which was said to be of Sita herself. The stream itself is believed to have been where Sita bathed. And the rock nearby the stream is believed to be the place where Sita sat praying.
Devotees believe that it’s in this location that the monkey god Hanuman attempted to rescue Sita from Ravana. There are deep impressions on the rock nearby that some believe are imprints left by Hanuman himself and Ravana’s royal elephant.
