Bird watching or birding is a form of wildlife observation in which the observation of birds is a recreational activity. It can be done with the naked eye, through a visual enhancement by binoculars and telescopes, or by listening for bird sounds.

Sri Lanka is the one of the best and remarkable destination for bird watching, as it has a wide range of favorable climatic conditions and natural habitats such as forests, scrublands, grasslands, wetlands, seas and agricultural lands. This paradise provide home to over 435 species of birds. Out of these,235 are resident and these include the most important 33 species that are recognizes as endemic to the country. A further 198 species have been recorded as migrants to country.

The main bird sanctuary in Sri Lanka is the Kumana National Park which is considered one of the most important nesting and breeding grounds in Sri Lanka. The Bundala national Park situated in the southernmost tip of the bird migratory route is a favourite birding ground where flocks of flamingos, herons and storks are a regular sight. The other places are the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary, Sinharaja Rain Forest, Bodinagala Forest Reserve, Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, Kitulgala Forest Reserve, Yala, Wilpattu, Udawalawe, Wagamuwa, Minneriya and Horton Plains National Parks in addition to numerous tanks, reservoirs, lagoons, marshes, lakes and rivers.Apart from that there are many lesser known destinations that ideal for bird watching.

Sigiriya sanctuary is a well-protected area as it is a UNECO World Heritage Site, waterways and thick canopied forests make it a heaven for birds. The jungles of Habarana surrounded by many lakes which is a very good habitat for birds

Anawilundawa Sanctuary is located between Chilaw and Puttalam and it is one of the 6 RAMSAR wetland in Sri Lanka. The uniqueness of Anawilundawa is, its three very distinct eco-systems collide; the coast, the mangroves and the fresh water tanks. This land comprises with nine tanks; six giant manmade cascading tanks and three secondary tanks, each one connected with the other and working as one unit. This unique ecological setting has made it a favourable nesting and breeding ground for hundreds of species of birds.

Bundala National Park is situated in the Southern Province and it is considering an internationally important wintering ground for migratory water birds in Sri Lanka. This place Provide home to 197 species of birds. The park area consists mainly of dry thorny scrubland and lagoons. In addition, there are streams, seasonal water holes, tanks, salt marshes, mangroves, seashores and salterns, aspects that add to the diversity of habitat and the richness of its bio diversity. Bundala became the first wetland to be declared as a Ramsar site in Sri Lanka. In 2005 the national park was designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, the fourth biosphere reserve in Sri Lanka.

Sinnharaja Forest Reserve is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and has been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This tropical Lowland Rainforest provide home to 147 species of birds and it is also the only location where 21 out of 26 bird species endemic to Sri Lanka.

Kitulgala is a one of the best places to experience the nature in different aspects. Nature trekking tour at Makandawa forest reserve, Kitulgala forest reserve, cycling tour to Belilena cave, where evidence of prehistoric human presence as was recorded. Travelers are able to explore country’s endemic bird species such as Sri Lanka Orange-billed babbler and chestnut-backed owlet, as well as variety of butterflies.
